Doherty 'very pleased' with poll results

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- With less than a week before Election Day, the candidates are in their final stretch of campaigning, and the race couldn't be tighter.

According to the latest exclusive Eyewitness News poll, the presidential race isn't the only one that's too close to call. Here in the Ocean State, Democratic Congressman David Cicilline is holding on to a very narrow lead over Republican challenger Brendan Doherty.

A survey of 300 likely voters in the state's First Congressional District shows Cicilline at 43 percent, and Doherty at 42 percent.

"I'm pleased with the poll, the momentum is swinging our way," said Doherty. "I'm very pleased where we are, it's all about momentum with less than a week to go."

Rep. Cicilline declined our request for an interview, but said in a statement that "Mr. Doherty is still trailing in this race because voters know what is at stake. We will continue to focus on the issues that really matter to Rhode Islanders, and our grassroots team will be working hard to spread our message for the next seven days."

Just one month ago, an Eyewitness News poll showed the incumbent congressman with a six-point lead.
