EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — This week on the first half of Newsmakers: Cranston Mayor Allan Fung. The rising star in the state's Republican Party talks about attending the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. He also reveals information about a planned meeting with Cranston retirees to discuss options for fixing the city's underfunded pension plan. Fung also gives an update on where the city stands in its flood mitigation efforts.
On the second half: Common Cause Rhode Island executive director John Marion. The head of the good-government group said he has concerns that changes to voting rules may cause confusion and frustration at the polls: there will be fewer polling places, precincts will be handling more voters and voters will have one hour less to cast a ballot. Marion said he is worried these changes could lead to long lines, dissuading people from voting. Marion also discusses recent successes for his organization including passing laws that create greater transparency for government bodies and political advertising.
