PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- When and if a bill calling for the decriminalization of marijuana makes it to Gov . Lincoln Chafee's desk, he will most likely sign it, according to a spokesman.
Currently, anyone found in possession of marijuana is subject to felony charges.
However, the Rhode Island House and Senate both approved legislation Tuesday which would making possession of an ounce or less of pot a civil offense and fine people $150. Minors caught with the drug would have to complete a drug awareness program and community service.
The bill now has to go through a process of reconciliation, where each chamber approves the other's bill. Once that happens, the legislation will make it to Gov. Chafee's desk.
According to spokesman Christian Vareika, Chafee said he was inclined to sign the legislation. However, he's going to speak with Col. Steven O'Donnell of the Rhode Island State Police before doing so.
O'Donnell has previously said he opposes relaxed penalties.
During a radio interview with 630 WPRO, Chafee pointed out that both Massachusetts and Connecticut have decriminalized marijuana, and it hasn't caused significant issues there.
