EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — This week on the first half of Newsmakers: Rhode Island Foundation President Neil Steinberg and entrepreneur Allan Tear. Built on a donation from philanthropist John Carter, the foundation sought fresh ideas to help turn around Rhode Island’s economy. The first annual Innovation Fellowship was awarded to two recipients. Tear, one of the fellows, discusses why Rhode Island is fertile ground for innovators and what the state can do to help nourish start-ups.
On the second half, Rhodel Island Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Keith Stokes and Paul Harden, the head of America’s Cup Rhode Island 2012, highlight the events surrounding the America’s Cup World Series coming to Newport in late June. Stokes also weighs in on why the unemployment rate continues to rise in Rhode Island.
