EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — This week on Newsmakers: Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.
With ailing cities and towns on the brink of bankruptcy, the governor has proposed a sweeping package of bills to give municipalities tools to cut spending, like shrinking retiree benefits and beefing up oversight of their finances. Chafee talks about what he’s doing to get the controversial set of bills passed, including pushing municipal leaders to lobby their state legislators. The governor also talks about his conversation with the family of fallen Nation Guard Sgt. Dennis Weichel, who died in Afghanistan in a non-combat-related accident.
