Gov. Lincoln Chafee is the first independent governor of Rhode Island.

Chafee, who lives in Warwick, entered politics in 1985 as a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention. He also served on the Warwick City Council, and was elected mayor of Warwick in 1992. He was reelected in 1994, 1996 and 1998, before being appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1999 to replace his father, John, who died in office. He was elected to a six-year term in 2000 but lost his reelection bid to Sheldon Whitehouse in 2006.
