Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., was elected to the Senate in 1996. His seat is next up for election in 2014.

Reed, born in Cranston, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point and served several years in active-duty military service. He earned a masters degree in public policy from Harvard, and returned to West Point as an associate professor. He left active duty in 1979 as a captain, but remained part of the Army Reserve until 1991.

Reed was elected to the Rhode Island Senate in 1984, serving three terms. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990, serving three terms there before being elected to replace retiring Sen. Claiborne Pell in 1996.
