Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, defeating then-Sen. Lincoln Chafee. His seat is next up for election in 2012.
Whitehouse, born in New York City, moved to Rhode Island to work in the state attorney general's office in 1985. He served as executive counsel to Gov. Bruce Sundlun starting in 1991 and later named as Sundlun's policy director.
President Clinton named Whitehouse as the U.S. attorney for Rhode Island in 1994. He held that position for four years before being elected the state's attorney general in 1998.
